There was a movie years ago starring Kevin Costner and Susan Sarandon in it called Bull Durham. Costner played an ageing baseball star and in one scene he was asked what it was like to be called up to The Show, which was the major league.
Tonight I’m attending my first Council meeting as a District Councillor in South Norfolk and I feel a little like Costner, except without the sardonic attitude.
Representing your constituents at any level of government can be a little daunting because you are not there at the meeting as you. Well I mean you are, but specifically you are there as their representative. Yet those who voted in your favour obviously saw something in you which made them believe you were the best person for the job.
This is what I have to keep saying to myself.
For many of us, it can be hard to stand up for ourselves and make ourselves heard. But in politics, YOU are not standing as YOU but as the people’s spokesperson. The weight of expectation may be high but YOU are their champion. Or should be if you do the thing right.
So I will duly trot off to the meeting tonight, nervous but determined to do my best (which at this stage is probably just listening and observing) and thinking that this may not be The Show and more like football League One.
But the best do get promoted. Game on.
