Here for another year

Mayor again, alongside my new Deputy Cllr Dave Roberts

This week I was re-elected as Mayor of Wymondham. Bearing in mind just over a year ago this wasn’t even on my radar, staying as Mayor is arguably even more of an achievement.

Ok, so I was elected among my councillors colleagues unopposed but it still remains a big deal to me. Huge.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again (corny as it sounds and not very politician like) that serving my community is an absolute privilege.

Really, it is.

I cannot understand the attitude of those, at any level of government, who seek election purely for selfish reasons.

Self promotion.

Ego building.

Arrogant don’t-you-know-who-I-am mentality which is completely at odds with what I believe these roles should involve.

Ditto those who bring nothing to the table except disruption tactics. Tinkering with procedures instead of introducing or supporting initiatives in collaboration with others, with the best interests of our community at our heart.

At Town Council level we are all volunteers.

Let me repeat that.

We are ALL volunteers.

My hard working colleagues are out there daily, clocking up volunteer hours, making a difference.

From calling a climate emergency with an eye on biodiversity and how to improve our green spaces to drawing volunteer groups together to collaborate and share. Formulating emergency plans to assist with issues such as flooding to tackling the challenges of providing a new cemetery. From helping new development residents setting up association committees which would regulate how their estates are managed to working to develop a Visit Wymondham strategy to plug into the tourism sector.

And most of all, communicating everything we can to residents who are often baffled with how local government works (despite toxic words in local media which seek to discredit us).

An opposition leaflet recently said the LibDems has lost their focus (see what they did there?) I’d say we are very much focused on what’s right for Wymondham, representing our community to the best of our abilities.

We are after all, like Liberal Democrats up and down the country, local champions. We are determined to keep Wymondham a vibrant place to live and work.

And we will continue to do that. Work hard.

Fight against the disrupters because we want the best for our wonderful Town.

And because we are #CouncillorsWhoCan.
